- Description
- In the Crypt, Nelson Chamber west bay, a sculpted marble wall monument with a medallion portrait on a sarcophagus flanked by two life-size figures and a lion. In the centre, a medallion portrait of a man, facing left, is set in a sarcophagus with lions' feet and draped with an oak trail, standing on a plain podium with the memorial inscription. On the left a female allegorical figure (Britannia) wearing a plumed helmet arranges the wreath with her left hand, her right resting on a shield. To the left is a seated mournful lion and on the right a young midshipman with naked torso kneeling before the podium and holding a banner on a mast. The figures stand on a narrow naturalistic base.
