After defeating France in June 1940, Hitler assumed Britain would sue for peace but ordered his armed forces to prepare for invasion. Hermann Goering assured him that a sustained air assault would destroy the RAF, winning the air superiority needed.

July 1940 saw German planes target shipping in the Channel, drawing the RAF into combat, before radar stations, communications centres and airfields faced round-the-clock bombing in August. The battle reached a climax with attacks on London in September.

Joan 'Elizabeth' Mortimer, Elspeth Henderson and Helen Turner of the WAAF. All three received the Military Medal for courageous conduct during attacks on Biggin Hill airfield. Biggin Hill suffered a total of ten major attacks between 30 Aug and 5 Sept.

A group of pilots of No. 303 (Polish) Squadron RAF return from a sortie. The first Polish squadrons were formed in the summer of 1940. Pilots came from several other countries, including Australia, Canada, Czechoslovakia, New Zealand and the USA.

RAF Duxford was a Sector Station in 12 Group, responsible for defending the Midlands and East Anglia. As the fighting intensified, Duxford's squadrons were called on to support 11 Group's defence of London and the south-east.

Despite incessant attacks, the RAF's defences held. The Luftwaffe could not continue, and in the autumn switched to 'nuisance' raids and night operations. The failure to defeat the RAF convinced Hitler to postpone his invasion plans indefinitely.

Arrival and departure

Museum opening hours: 10:00-17:00 (on occasions the Museum may close early, but we will let you know of any opening hour changes) All groups enter the Museum through the Group Entrance unless otherwise stated on the provisional booking letter. If you are able to arrive later and depart later in the day you may have more success in booking your preferred date and session. If your preferred arrival time is unavailable we will allocate the closest available space. If it is significantly different we will then contact you to discuss it.

Optional extras

The Green Room

For groups booking the minimum of a welcome. Bookings are allocated on a first come, first served basis. The area accommodates 80. We are not able to offer sole occupancy for groups of less than 80. We will allocate a 30 minute time slot that fits in with your visit. The room is not able to be booked at weekends and school holidays because it is free for all visitors to use.

Watershard Cafe

We recommend that groups of ten people or more wanting to use the Museum cafe between 11.30 and 2.30 pre-book in advance to avoid disappointment. If yes we will ask our catering team to contact you directly to discuss menus and prices so please ensure we have the correct contact details. All requests are subject to availability. Reserved seating and 15% off pre-ordered food is available for groups of 20 or more.

AirShard Viewing Platform

Your group will be eligible for free passes to the Museum’s viewing platform as part of your booking. Passes can be collected from the admissions desk on the day of the visit. Usual charges £1.20 or 60p concessions per person.

Coach Parking

This will be free as part of your pre-booking. Unfortunately we are unable to offer free parking for any individual vehicles. Usual charges - £4 for cars - £15 minibus/coach.

We will invoice you after the visit is complete or you can pay by cash or card on the day for any charged activities.
