In the Spotlight: Remembering 9/11

10 September 2011 to 30 September 2013

10 September 2011 - 30 September 2012

A British Union flag recovered from Ground Zero in the wreckage of the World Trade Center, New York, will go on public display for the first time on 10 September 2011.

The flag is two metres in width and is displayed as our In the Spotlight featured exhibit to mark the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. The flag was officially presented to Great Britain, on the first anniversary of 9/11, by the people of the United States, and it was laid on the altar of St Paul’s Cathedral in a memorial service for victims of the attacks.

In October, a huge section of steel, 7 metres in height and weighing more than a tonne, from the World Trade Center, will also go on display. Thought to be from the North Tower, the columns formed part of a window section from an external wall. The steel, distorted and twisted, is evidence of the massive force and impact of the collapse of the towers.
