Free activities for families every weekend and every day throughout the school holidays.

Visitors of all ages can get involved in family workshops, tours, games and activities.

Storytelling: Animals and War

All Saturdays and Sundays 10.30am (excluding Saturday 2 Sunday 3 July)

Join us for family storytelling sessions about animals and war. Puppets and pictures will bring to life heroic and heart-warming tales of wartime animal bravery, such as the story of Irma the dog who helped rescue people from collapsed buildings when V1 and V2 bombs were dropped in London in 1944.

Open Studio: Stubby of the Trenches

Saturdays and Sundays between 2 - 17 July, 2-3pm

Learn more about real life First World War dog, Stubby of the Trenches. Handle artefacts from IWM’s collections including a First World War soldier’s button cleaner and make your own Stubby puppet inspired by the story of this medal-winning dog.

Open Studio: Blackout Bling

Daily between Thursday 21 and Sunday 31 July, 2 - 3pm

Join us to learn more about what life was like living through the blackout in the Second World War. Handle real artefacts from the museum’s collections including an ARP lamp and make your glow in the dark bracelet, bag charm or key fob inspired by the real luminous badges worn by British civilians of the day.

Open Studio: Pompom Toy

Daily between Mon 1 and Fri 12 August, 2 - 3pm

Get creative and learn more about life on the Second World War home front. Handle real artefacts from the museum’s collections including a darning mushroom and make your own pompom toy to take home and keep.

Open Studio: Felt Decorations

Daily between Monday 15 and Wednesday 31 August, 2 - 3pm

Be inspired by the creativity and ingenuity of people staying stylish on a shoestring during the Second World War and make your own felt and bead decoration using a range of colourful materials. Learn more about life on the home front and handle real artefacts from the museum’s collections including an ARP lamp.

1940s Family Fashion

Saturday 13 August, 2 - 2.30pm

From hand me downs and patched pyjamas, to make do and mend, hear about the impact of the Second World War on the way we dressed. Join History's Maid and hear all about life as child in the 1940s. You will never look at a pair of socks the same way again!
