About air shows at IWM Duxford

Why do air shows take place at IWM Duxford?

RAF Duxford is nearly 100 years old. Built in 1917 and an active airfield since 1918, IWM is now responsible for preserving its history and heritage and telling the stories of the men and women who flew and fought from here. This is the reason why we still stage air shows at IWM: because aircraft, flown by brave and expert pilots, have always taken to the skies above Duxford. Through our immersive air shows we hope to bring more people closer to the realities of war, sharing the heritage, history and the stories of real people with new audiences every year. We hope these audiences will come back again and tell others about their experiences.

What air shows take place at IWM Duxford?

There are three incredible air shows in our events season. May and September shows are thrilling spectacles staged by IWM, celebrating the history and heritage of RAF Duxford. As a charity, it's a great way to bring new audiences to our museum, bringing a new perspective on how visitors can support the airfield, the air craft and new major learning projects.

They are a great day out for all ages including three and a half hours of incredible air displays, a Flightline Walk of the aircraft before they take to the skies, live entertainment, retail and merchandising stalls, food and drink and a large themed show ground. On top of this live event activity, visitors can also enjoy our important historic site including the airfield and its listed buildings, AirSpace and the American Air Museum.

In July, the Flying Legends show is staged by our onsite partners The Fighter Collection.

Ticket policies and admission fees

Why is your sales policy 'advance ticket only'?

Our air shows are very popular. Many of our air show peers and large scale event competitors had already moved to advance ticketing when we decided to follow their lead in September 2015, ensuring we could manage the sheer numbers of people on site. Advanced ticketing helps us to plan for simple comforts like enough toilets, programmes and food and drink stalls. Most importantly though, our site does have a capacity limit for how many cars and people we can accommodate safely within the airfield and showground. Advanced ticketing makes sure we can only sell the amount of tickets that will ensure a great on-site experience.

What is the last chance I have to purchase an Air Show ticket?

Children under 16 and disabled carers are free of charge (May and September) but please book and download a ticket for them in advance.

The exception is for Gold and Silver Premium Experience passes which need to be physically posted out. Check our air show web pages for information on last dates to purchase Gold and Silver passes.

They do sell quickly – book as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. A limited number of Premium Pass upgrades are sometimes available on the day on a first come, first served basis. Ask staff on arrival if you are interested in finding out more.

If travelling by car, please book your Vehicle Parking Permit in advance too. You may be turned away from our car parks without it (VIP parking permits are included with Gold and Silver Passes).

What happens if I turn up without a confirmed, pre-purchased ticket?

Please do not travel to IWM Duxford on an air show day without having purchased a ticket in advance. You can buy your tickets online, including your Vehicle Permit Pass if you intend to travel by car, up until 12 midnight the night before. Your tickets must be shown on arrival. For advice on how to print or download your ticket, please see below.

How do I know my ticket is 'confirmed'?

When booking by email, you will receive an initial e-response from no_reply_iwm@maximweb.net. This email will include your download links to save your e-ticket to your device; or to print to your local printer. Please note that all of our e-tickets contain a bar code. This bar code must be printed correctly for use on the day. When you download your e-ticket two barcodes should appear, one within the box at the top of the page and the second at the bottom. If you cannot see these barcodes but instead characters with boxes behind them, try and save the e-tickets and reopen them. If they still don't appear correctly, please update the version of Adobe Acrobat Reader. Once done, reopen your e-tickets and the barcodes will display correctly for you to print.

If you are having any trouble booking with an overseas credit card please call our Box Office on +0044 1223 499 353

Can I change my booking after I've received my e-response message?

Our tickets are non-transferrable and non-refundable and so please make sure that you are booking the correct day and check that everyone in your party can also make it before confirming your booking. Due to the high volume of tickets we sell for our events each year, we are unable to process changes to tickets once they have been confirmed. Our terms and conditions are in line with ticketing policies for other similar large scale events and can be found here

However, there are checks in place within the booking system to allow you to review your purchase before you agree the T&Cs of purchase. Please do ensure you check all of your ticket types, dates and costs before agreeing to the terms and conditions of sale.

Can I have my tickets posted?

If you choose to purchase your tickets through the box office, your tickets will be posted using the Royal Mail Online Despatch Service (charges apply). To enable you and us to keep track of your tickets, your data will be transferred to Royal Mail systems.  Your data will be stored securely, although it may be stored outside the EU.  By choosing this option, you consent to this. Further information is available through the Royal Mail:

http://www.royalmail.com/sites/default/files/RMOnlineServicesTerms_April13.pdf

This service provides the most efficient and secure way for us to post your tickets as the service is tracked and must be signed for on delivery however, we would encourage you to book your tickets online as you will receive instant confirmation that your booking has been confirmed and you don’t have to wait for your tickets to be posted out to you.

Do I have a 'cooling off' period after buying my tickets?

A good guide for understanding consumer rights around ticket buying is the Which? Guide.

We are committed to ensuring our sales processes are transparent and our T&Cs are reviewed every year to ensure we communicate effectively our major event policy, which is a standard position across the events industry. Please do read and check the T&Cs before you confirm your ticket purchase online, or ask our box office team to explain our T&Cs if purchasing on the telephone.

Our Box Office service is available Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm (excluding public holidays)

How do you set your prices?

We are committed to benchmarking our prices against our major outdoor and leisure competitors to ensure we are in line with expected prices. As a charity, we are always looking to balance the needs of ensuring our events and activities support our aims by being commercially viable, with the need to ensure we are inclusive and welcoming across a wide range of communities and audiences. Everyone that attends an air show is helping to support IWM Duxford.

This year we’ve made some changes to our pricing, including offering a special limited promo code (SUPER15) for Duxford Air Festival and Duxford Battle of Britain Air Show, helping people to enjoy 15% off our already great value Early Bird prices. The SUPER15 promo* runs until 31 January 2017 and is valid on Day Out tickets, Weekend Passes and for Friends of Duxford member tickets; and our great value Early Bird price runs up until two weeks before the event weekend.

*Terms and conditions apply.  Not available on:

  • Gold Pass Premium Experience
  • Silver Pass Premium Experience
  • Seating enclosures
  • Programme vouchers
  • Vehicle parking permits
  • Cannot be used in conjuntion with any other offer
  • SUPER15 will expire on 31 January 2017
  • Not available to use against tickets for The Fighter Collection's Flying Legends Air Show on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 July

Are ticket prices different according to the air show you attend?

There are two types of show at Duxford’s historic airfield:

  • IWM Duxford air shows which in 2017 include Duxford Air Festival (May) and Duxford Battle of Britain Air Show (September), produced and displayed by Imperial War Museums; and
  • The Fighter Collection’s Flying Legends Air Show, produced and displayed by a third party partner at IWM Duxford

IWM Duxford’s May and September air shows will always have consistent pricing. We do not set the prices for Flying Legends, this is at the discretion of the Fighter Collection, and therefore prices will be different if you attend a July air show.

Do you charge for children?

We will no longer charge for children in 2017. We hope that this encourages more families to come and enjoy the spectacle of an air show. By encouraging children to connect with Duxford’s history and heritage and the thrill of live flying displays and aerobatics; we hope to create memories that will take families on a life-long journey with us.

Do you offer discounts or promotions?

We have a great value promo code available until 31 January, offering 15% off our already great value Early Bird prices. The SUPER15 promo codes is only available on IWM Duxford air shows which are May’s late Bank Holiday weekend Duxford Air Festival and September’s Duxford Battle of Britain Air Show. Terms and conditions do apply, please check when booking your tickets.

Do you have disabled visitor pricing?

Yes we do. We offer a disabled concession and one free adult carer ticket for every disabled concession purchased. These tickets are available online and through the Box Office on +44 (0)1223 499 353. If driving to IWM Duxford please remember to book your free disabled vehicle parking permit. You will need it to access the closest onsite parking on the day.

Our Box Office service is available Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm (excluding public holidays)

Why do you charge for vehicle parking?

The roads in and around IWM Duxford are busy. The extra traffic that air shows bring onto the roads can put too much pressure on the transport system and the experience of getting to and from air shows, in previous years, has sometimes been stressful for all involved. By ensuring that people intending to travel onsite by car have a pre-booked parking ticket we can work effectively with the Highways Agency on understanding the additional amount of traffic we will be bringing onto the roads over the weekend. In turn, the Highways Agency are experts in finding a way to accommodate extra traffic and managing potential queues. On site, the parking charge allows us to employ extra event staff to help with parking and return. There are alternative ways to travel to IWM Duxford and we always recommend public transport as the best way to enjoy your air show day out.

Why do I need to pay £5 to park on site if travelling directly by car?

If you are planning to travel to IWM Duxford by car you must have booked a valid vehicle parking permit and have it printed and ready to show on your windscreen as you arrive on site. If you have booked your admission tickets but forgot to book a vehicle parking permit at the time, please visit our bookings page to request and download your vehicle parking pass before you travel.  Vehicle parking permits are not available to download or pick up on the day from our admissions team. Entry may be refused if we cannot accommodate numbers onsite. All cars are parked at owners' risk.

We try to be transparent in our pricing and therefore do not include a car parking charge within the standard admission price tickets. As we encourage visitors to travel as much a possible by public transport, it would be unfair to charge them a hidden cost to cover overheads including land rental fees (we do not own the surrounding land but need to rent fields for cars), additional events staffing to manage the flow of traffic into and out of IWM Duxford, and signage in and around the area.

Can I get my money back if it's raining on the day?

Air shows will not be cancelled due to rain. The flying display is always subject to weather, but it's unusual to not see any aircraft flying. The whole of IWM Duxford is also open on the day including our eight indoor exhibition spaces which will offer a full day out whatever the weather. Find out more about the exhibitions to plan your visit and what to see and do on the day.

What's the difference between an Early Bird ticket, a Standard ticket, Premium Experience Passes, Gold and Silver Passes?

Our Early Bird ticket is available from launch up until two weeks before the event. It’s your entrance ticket to the air show and IWM Duxford, from 8am until 6pm.

‘Premium Experience Pass’ is the collective name for our two exclusive marquee offers:

  • Gold Pass is our exclusive marquee close to the Flight Line;
  • Silver Pass is our exclusive family experience, again close to the Flight Line but in a relaxed environment for families with special children's activities to keep them entertained in between flying.

Can I upgrade my ticket to a Gold Pass or Silver Pass?

On the day, upgrades are limited and may not be available if we have reached capacity, but it is worth asking once onsite. Gold and Silver Pass upgrades sold on the day will not include parking space upgrades. Please do ensure that, if you intend to upgrade on the day, you arrive at our entrances with your pre-purchased Early Bird or Standard Ticket and a vehicle parking permit if you intend to park in any of our parking areas.

Are children allowed in the Gold Marquee?

We'd recommend looking at the Silver Pass offer rather than Gold Pass. It was especially created to ensure families had a relaxed environment to enjoy the sights and sounds of our air shows. The Silver marquee is right next to the Flight Line and includes a VIP parking pass and dedicated toilets. If you do decide the Gold Pass is right for your family please note we don't have a child Gold Pass price and they will be charged the full premium ticket rate.

Travelling to the air show

Please remember when planning your travel that there are no tickets available for sale on the gates at arrival at IWM Duxford on either day of an air show. Please do not board a courtesy bus without your valid (readable barcode), pre-purchased ticket as there are no tickets for sale on the door. Please don't be disappointed! Buses will return to the Park & Ride at regular intervals from 3pm and then every 30 minutes, with the last bus leaving IWM Duxford at 6.30pm. Timings of buses may be affected by local road traffic congestion. Please note that although the courtesy bus is free, a £1 parking charge still applies at Trumpington Park & Ride.

Travelling by car (Parking onsite)

Should you choose to travel direct by car, IWM Duxford is located just south of Cambridge at Junction 10 of the M11 motorway. When you approach IWM Duxford please follow the temporary road signs rather than your sat nav. Please make sure that you've booked and printed your vehicle parking permit if you wish to park at IWM Duxford. We cannot accommodate cars onsite without a pre-booked, downloaded car pass. You can book these car passes in advance on our bookings page.

During the period of the air show, a traffic management system will operate on the M11, A505 and at Junction 10 of the M11, to ensure traffic flows as freely as possible. We recommend that visitors travelling south on the M11 take the alternative route, which will be signposted from Junction 11 of the M11, along the A10 to Royston and then east to the museum along the A505. For up-to-date traffic and travel information on the day keep an eye on the Highways England website.

Because the air show is so popular, there are different car parks available depending on the time you arrive, or where you are arriving from. Each car park is clearly signposted and staff will direct you to the closest entrance. Please ensure you display your vehicle parking pass on your windscreen as you arrive at the car park for staff to check, and keep it displayed clearly during your stay. Entry will be refused if we cannot accommodate car numbers onsite because a vehicle parking permit was not requested in advance.  All cars are parked at owner's risk.

Travelling by motorbike

Motorbikes do not need a vehicle parking permit as they can be parked on a small amount of hard standing ground on site in our East car park – you'll be directed as you approach IWM Duxford. As this site is limited however, do arrive early to avoid disappointment. Are there cloakrooms on site?

Unfortunately no, due to security there are no facilities for left luggage or cloakrooms at the air show. Please keep your belongings with you at all times and report any suspicious items to staff.

What aircraft will be on display?

We will continually update the participation list as new aircraft are added or amended. The final, full participation list is available in the week prior to the air show. We recommend you check our website regularly for up-to-date information on participating aircraft. We will also send you an email in the week before the event counting down to the day, which will include a run-down of the aircraft you can expect to see, subject to change on the day.

What is the difference between the flying participation on Saturday and Sunday for air shows?

The flying participation for a two-day air show is generally similar on both days though there might be some aircraft which display on one day only. For more information, please refer to the aircraft participation list for each air show which will state which aircraft are displaying on Saturday or Sunday only. A Weekend Pass is a great value option for people that don’t want to miss out on the flying.

Why do some aircraft disappear from the participation list?

Aircraft are only added to the participation list when we have received written confirmation from the operator that they will be attending. However there are a number of reasons an aircraft may have to cancel its appearance at the event. These include operational commitments and aircraft serviceability, which are out of our control.

When will flying display timings be available?

A general flying programme is available in the souvenir programme, this can be obtained on the day.

What is there to do during the morning of an air show?

Included in the ticket price is entry to IWM Duxford, including all exhibitions, for you to explore. You can also enjoy a great shopping experience at the trade stands on site, enjoy refreshments in the restaurant and cafés, explore the Visitor Centre and take part in other activities across the site. The Flightline Walk is also open during the morning from 9am with last entry at 12 noon. This is your chance to admire the display aircraft close-up. A separate charge of £6.00 per person applies for the Flightline Walk on the day.

Is there Wi-Fi access at the air show?

Yes. We offer free Wi-Fi access across most of the museum, including our exhibitions and public spaces. Access begins as soon as you've agreed to IWM's terms and conditions of use.

Will there be ticket checks?

Yes, there will be. You'll need to show your tickets when you arrive at the air show. If you've booked standard tickets via the website, you will have been sent an e-ticket - you can print this out at home or show it to the team on your phone or tablet so they can scan it for you. Please ensure you have a valid (readable barcode) ticket for each person in your group/party. Tickets are not available for sale on the gate on arrival. Children aged under 16 years and disabled carers are free of charge (May and September) but please book and download a free ticket for them in advance. Remember, please bring along any proof of concession too.

Can I return to my car during the day?

If you have been allocated a parking space offsite but close by and need to return to your car during the day, please visit the entry point kiosks – they'll ensure your hand is stamped, allowing you re-entry. If you have parked onsite, you may be asked not to return to your car or vehicle during the flying display. This especially affects campervans who are parked on the west side of the museum, close to the flight line. Thank you for your understanding.

Can I bring a windbreak, tent or stepladder?

You will not be allowed to set up windbreaks or tents next to the display barrier as they can spoil the view for other visitors. Please place them behind the white line on the grass area. If you need help or advice on where they should be placed please ask a member of staff. We will have to remove windbreaks and tents placed against or close to the display barrier.

Please don't bring stepladders as these can't be used anywhere on site. We will remove any stepladders that are brought to the air show.

Air Show Guidelines

Air Shows are busy events. We have put in place some rules to make sure everyone can enjoy the views and experience safely:

  • Windbreaks and tents cannot be attached to the display barrier as they can spoil the view for other visitors, please keep these behind the white line
  • Please leave your pets at home – they won’t like the noise and shouldn’t be left in vehicles.
  • Air shows are loud and noisy – it’s part of the fun. Please do try and protect children by bringing ear defenders, or they are available for sale from traders on the day.
  • Bring your camera so you can share your favourite photos with your friends and family – and include #DuxfordAirShows so we can enjoy them too!
