Sir Stanley Spencer Painting Restoration

Sir Stanley Spencer was commissioned by the War Artist’s Advisory Committee to illustrate the valuable contribution made by the British shipbuilding industry and its workers in the war effort.  His series of eight paintings focus on the contribution made by the working class community of Port Glasgow.

The paintings were acquired by the Imperial War Museum in 1946 and form one of the most important groups of work by a British artist during this time in terms of scale, ambition and scope.

IWM has been able to undertake a comprehensive restoration of the complete series with the generous support of the following trusts:

Association for Cultural Exchange Charitable Trust
CHK Charities Limited
The John EllermanFoundation
RKT Harris Charitable Trust
Charles Hayward Foundation
The PF Charitable Trust
The Pilgrim Trust

Live and Learn

Live and Learn was a course for non-traditional groups and leaders which explored the barriers groups face when visiting cultural venues.

Through the course, participants developed confidence and skills such as planning a successful visit and exploring ways of engaging with subject matter they might previously have thought too difficult.

Over 100 group leaders attended the courses, resulting in 20 repeat visits by 270 people who might otherwise not have visited.  The course also offered formal training for IWM staff and volunteers.

Live and Learn was generously supported by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation.
