Object description

image: A street scene in a small town. A brass band, Girl Guides, Police and Home Guard participate in War Weapons Week outside a community hall and are watched by a crowd of civilians. Union flags are on display and a speech is being made from a trailer. The chart erected on the front wall indicates the current state of the campaign. Anti-invasion obstacles line the road.

Label

War Weapons Week was a focus for local fundraising campaigns to support the war effort. The weeks were heavily promoted and elements of local competition encouraged. The painting conveys the sense of civic pride in the occasion, with a number of uniformed groups turned out and local dignitaries seated within the courtyard in front of the building. The crowd of onlookers, without being excluded, have to stand on the wall, or peer over in order to watch.
