Object description

image: a scene below deck on a landing craft transporting infantry. Men are sleeping in cramped conditions on fold down bunks suspended by chains. Most of the men are asleep, though one man in the left background is preparing to mount the upper bunk. The bunks are in tiers of three.

Label

Ardizzone records his journey on the LCI (Landing Craft Infantry) on 11 June 1944: 'Phone message at breakfast - car arriving immediately to take me to L.C.I., fearful rush. Find ship gone when I arrived at pier. The next three hours spent on the water in small boats trying to find her. Some hair-raising climbs up and down piers. Arrive on board about 3pm. Find mostly R.A.M.C personnel on board, pleasant crowd.' A sketch realting to this drawing can be found alongside the diary entry (IWM LD 7580 [D])
