Extract from Edward Ardizzone, 'Baggage to the Enemy', John Murray (1941), p. 17: 'I accompanied the battery once on an exercise through the forest of Nieppe, where we passsed through several lonely villages which had escaped the ravages of the last war and the fate of rebuilding.'
