Object description

image: a crowd of sailors wearing various uniforms gather around a roulette table, with the wheel in the foreground.

Worsley describes Milag Nord, the Merchant Navy camp, as "an extraordinary place and a microcosm of the outside world. Almost all classes of society were represented and every colour. It had its camp aristocracy, camp proletariat, camp altruists, camp scoundrels, camp ascetics and camp alcoholics (enjoying rather dreadful distillations from secret stills). There was organised gambling and a really excellent theatrical group led by Henry Mollison; there was even a male brothel." Lagermarks were official camp currency, paid by the Germans at a rate guaranteed by their home governments (for the British this was £1 = 15 lagermarks). (From exhibition catalogue, Burstow Gallery, Brighton, 1995)
