image: The Kaiser sits centrally in the gloom of a laboratory; covered in a large cape and wearing a pickelhaube, he sits hunched in a chair, his hands on his knees, staring at the work bench. At his feet, beneath his top-boots lies a sabre, only the massive hilt of which can be seen. On the bench, with a retort in the foreground a chemical experiment is in progress. By the site of the bench, to the right of the composition, two cylinders lean against the wall, marked 'Acide Prussique'. The composition is surmounted by the title, roughly etched in upper and lower case.
