Object description

whole: the title and text occupy the centre and lower centre, in black, with the image forming a decorative border. All set against a white background. image: two classical columns supporting a heavily decorated architrave. The flags of the Allied nations are placed at the top of each column (including the flags of Great Britain, China, Portugal, Greece, Serbia, Belgium, Italy, Montenegro, Cuba, Brazil and Japan) with the French Tricolore and the American 'Stars and Stripes' in the centre. A shield featuring an American eagle emblem and a shield featuring a French cockerel are also placed at the top of the columns. The cockerel, known as the 'Coq Gaulois' is the national symbol of France. This came about because the Latin word 'gallus' means both 'Gaul' and 'rooster'. Since 1848 the Gallic Rooster has appeared on the official seal of the Republic.
