This medal was awarded to Captain Conrad Vidot for the bravery shown when his ship, the mv San Demetrio was torpedoed, set on fire and sunk by a German submarine off the east coast of the USA on the 17h March 1942. There was a loss of nineteen lives and six men injured. He was also awarded an OBE. This medal was awarded by Lloyds of London to officers and men of the Merchant Navy and fishing fleet in cases of exceptional gallantry at sea in time of war; the medal was first announced in December 1940, with the approval of the Admiralty and Ministry of Shipping; the medal was first awarded on 18 March 1941.

Physical description

White metal medal suspended from a white ribbon with a blue stripe down either side. The obverse of the medal depicts a seated heroic figure looking out over the sea on which is seen in the distance a vessel of the Mercantile Marine. In his right hand the figure holds a wreath. A legend encircling the medal reads 'AWARDED BY LLOYD'S'. On the reverse is a trident surrounded by a garlanded wreath of oak leaves and acorns. A banner stretches across the centre inscribed ‘BRAVERY’. The inscription around the edge of the medal reads: 'CAPTAIN CONRAD VIDOT, M.V. "SAN DEMETRIO", 16th MARCH 1942'.
