Additional outer clothing made of animal hides were issued to soldiers on the Western Front during the winter of 1914-1915. Some were made of sheepskin, some of goatskin. Whilst effective in having good insulation properties, the men often referred to them as 'Bunnies', 'Wooly Bears', or 'Stinkers'. Other items of animal skin were used, some privately made, but by the second winter the development of the serge-lined leather jerkin superceded the above and the latter continued to be seen in one form or other throughout the Twentieth Century.
