Although the Gloster Gladiator was obsolescent by 1939, the outbreak of the Second World War ensured that it was retained as a front line fighter, and the type served with distinction in France, Norway, North Africa and Malta. The beleaguered island of Malta was defended by a small force of mixed aircraft, which included the 3 Gloster Sea Gladiator aircraft, that famously became known as 'Faith', 'Hope' and 'Charity'.
