Decorative German bierstein associated with the 'Christmas Truce' held on the British sector of the Western Front around 25-26 December 1914. The bierstein was presented to Private Bill Tucker (Army Ordnance Corps) as 'captain' of a winning British football team after an impromptu friendly match played against German troops.
History note
The inscription on the Bierstein is dedicated to the German Husaren-Regiment König Wilhelm I.
Physical description
Porcelain bierstein (H 30cm x diameter 11cm) with metal lid. The piece is decorated with 'cavalry scenes' and the following ornate inscriptions: 'Brueder stokt die Glaeser an hoch lebe der Reservemann'-(around edge just under rim) / 'Stolz zu Ross; Spaet & Frueh; Die Cavallerie' (on lid) / 'Wenn Husaren attakieren muss der staerkste Feind verlieren; Reserve had Ruh!', '1907 And[enken]. an m[einem] Dienstz[eit]. 6.d.5.Esk[adron]. Hus[aren] Regt. Konig Wilh[elm] I 1 rh[ei]n[ische] No. 7 Bonn 1908' / 'Einj. Fr[ei]w[il]l[ige] Lehm op! Stich' / 'Die Tropete ruft zum Scheiden drum nein Maedchen lebe wohl!' (around base) / 'Leb' wohl; Bockreiss'aus; Parole Heimat; Ankunftbe Muttern; Zum letztenmal'. In addition there are two lists of names on either side of the handle.
