This Finnish M27 rifle was one of the main rifles in service with the Finnish Army during the 1939-40 'Winter War' against the Soviet Union. Following the establishment of an independent Finland at the end of the First World War, the Finnish infantry was predominantly armed with captured Russian Model 1891 rifles (see FIR 7509). Subsequently it was hoped that a Finnish-designed rifle could be produced, but this proved too expensive. In a compromise solution a modified version of the Russian rifle was adopted for service with the Finnish Army as the M27. This featured a new, shorter, barrel and used a knife bayonet instead of the original Russian socket bayonet. Unfortunately the new rifle was found to have a weak front-band, which led to damage if the rifle was fired with the bayonet fitted or bayonet fighting was undertaken. Its reputation was further tarnished by the fact the the Finnish Civil Guard managed to equip itself with superior rifles (the M28 and M28-30). It was intended to replace all of these rifles with a new model, the M39, but production had not commenced by the time of the Soviet invasion in November 1939.
