Physical description

1/35 scale model of a British Challenger 1 (Mk3) Main Battle Tank, made from a Tamiya kit

History note

The Challenger proved its combat worth during Operation Desert Storm in Iraq, in 1991, where it acheived an outstanding service availablity of over 90%, in the harsh desert environment. There were many modifications made to adapt it for use, including an improved cooling system, better air cleaners, extra side skirts from Chobham armour, bolt on reactive front armour, and extra fuel carried in external tanks. 180 Challenger tanks were deployed to Saudi Arabia, and the Challenger claimed 300 kills against armoured vehicles for no losses. It also has the distinction of the longest range tank-to-tank kill in military history, destroying an Iraqi tank at a range of 5.1 km.
