History note
This Union flag was discovered at Ground Zero amidst the wreckage of the World Trade Centre New York, destroyed on 11 September, 2001 when its twin towers were hit by two airliners hijacked by Moslem terrorists. The flag was returned to the people of Great Britain by the people of the United States at a ceremony in London. The flag was presented to Mr David Blunkett (Home Secretary) by Lieutenant Frank Dwyer of the New York Police Department, on 11 September 2002 and laid on the altar of St Paul's Cathedral. Subsequently it was presented to the Imperial War Museum by DCMS.
