History note

Board designed during the late 19th century by Lieutenant-Colonel Verner, Rifle Brigade, and some time Professor of Military Topography, Royal Military Academy, Woolwich.

Physical description

Rectangular wooden sketch board with two integral metal rollers slit to hold a length of paper which can be rolled forward as the sketching advances, Front of board in fitted with a small magnetic compass and the rear with a clinometer calibrated to 50 degrees. A leather strap to attach the board to the user's forearm is fitted to the back of the board.
