History note

British Red Cross Society long service medal awarded to Mrs Julia Lesser. To qualify for this medal members of the British Red Cross Society (or in Scotland, the St Andrew's Ambulance Corps) must have rendered 15 years' active efficient service. Note designer's initials, 'PM' (denoting Percy Metcalf) at the base of the obverse design. (Reference : Dorling, H T (Captain) : 1970 : Ribbons and Medals : George Philip, London, p.129)

Physical description

MODEL. Obverse design: Florence Nightingale, bust, right profile, veiled, holding shoulder high a lighted oil lamp. Behind her is the broad horizontal arm of a cross. Reverse design : Geneva cross, overlaid by saltire. Between the angles formed by the upper arms of the saltire the text. Reverse text: "LONG AND EFFICIENT SERVICE+". Suspender form: straight bar, swivel. Ribbon colours: red & white & yellow. Ribbon pattern: red with a yellow stripe towards either edge and a central white stripe (4 mm wide).
