John F Griffiths, of Niagara Falls, Ontario, was the first RCAF pilot after the First World War to be granted a permanent commission in the RAF, in 1926. He was awarded the DFC for leading twelve Wellingtons of 99 Squadron on a daylight raid on German warships on 14 December 1939. Between July and November 1940, Griffiths shared command of 311 (Czech) Squadron, being involved in the training of Czech crews in Wellington bombers.
