Object description

image: A row of horses stand with their rears to the viewer. Each of the horses is being groomed, and three cloth capped NCOs stand to the right shouting orders. There are cone-like bell tents dotted around the landscape, and a group of men exercising more horses in the background.

Label

'I think in a letter to Muirhead Bone I gave the title of my picture as 'Stable-time at the Wagon Lines', but I think I will make a little addition to this and have it 'Feeds Round! Stable time at the Wagon Lines, France'. Feeds Round! is the order given by the Sergent Major for the men to cease grooming. The nose bags are then brought and placed just behind each horse where the men wait in readiness for the final order Feed!.' From letter to Ernest Blaikley, Keeper of Art, 18-8-1924. The memory of his service in war remained with him afterwards and he continued to produce war-related artworks into the 1920s. This particular work was painted in 1922.

Label

Soldiers work quickly and deftly around the agitated horses, awaiting their food. Roberts described the scene: ‘Feeds Round! is the order given by the Sergeant Major for the men to cease grooming. The nose bags are then brought and placed just behind each horse where the men wait in readiness for the final order Feed!’
