image: A central image of a mounted French dragoon in profile facing left. Both horse and rider stand in the middle of a damp country road which leads diagonally across the composition right to left, ending at the ruins of a village in the middle distance. The dragoon, head bowed, silently pays his respects to a brother-in-arms whose grave lies by the roadside to the left. The grave is surmounted by a rough wooden cross together with the occupant's regulation red and blue képi. The soldier wears full regulation kit, crested, cloth-covered helmet, a black horsehair plume at the back; blue tunic, red breeches and black boots. Fully armed, he carries a lance slung over his right shoulder, a carbine over his back and cavalry sword partly obscured by a blue cape draped over the horse blanket.
