Black and white photographic prints relating to the Royal Air Force service of Captain Hodgson in the years immediately following the First World War. The collection includes a number of photographs taken in Mesopotamia during the Arab revolt against British rule 1920-1922 including: the Maude Bridge across the Tigris at Baghdad open to allow the passage of shipping; memorial over the grave of 43 men of the 2nd Battalion, Dorsetshire Regiment, killed at the Battle of Shaiba on 14 April 1915; group photographs of officers, NCOs and men of 31st Wing (RAF) Headquarters, Baghdad; men of No. 84 Squadron's Aerial Gunnery and Bombing Section at Shaiba; oblique aerial photograph of Shattra taken on 30 September 1921 during a bombing raid on Arab forces. Also photographs taken at Gosport: an SE5A (serial D7022) at Fort Grange aerodrome; Flying Officer Hope standing alongside the wreckage of Bristol Fighter (serial E2585) crashed in Gosport Wood; wreckage of Sopwith Cuckoo (serial N9505) on Fort Grange aerodrome and wreckage of Avro 504K (serial H5200) in Gosport Park following a forced landing with engine trouble. Other photographs relate to Calshot and Portland: visit by Air Vice-Marshal Sir Vyell Vyvyan (Air Officer Commanding Costal Area 1919-1924) including inspection of Nos.1 and 2 Squadrons; the liner OLYMPIC; aerial views of Portland. There is also an aerial photograph showing the Royal Yacht VICTORIA AND ALBERT off Cowes, Isle of Wight, during the yachting regatta.
Physical description
Badly damaged photograph album containing black and white photographic prints mounted individually on album pages. Only the rear cover (grey cloth) of the album is present and this, as well as a number of pages, are detached from the page block. The album was made by Johnsons of London as is a Morland Albun S 1290. Each print is accompanied by title, giving geographical location, and a text caption handwritten in black ink.
