Object description

The Torcross Hotel at Torcross on Slapton Sands in Devon stands empty and windowless, its facade pockmarked by naval shelling, following training exercises carried out in the area in preparation for the D-Day Landings. The original caption states that the "damage was surprisingly superficial considering [that the] hotel stands on assault beach". The hotel is right on the water's edge.
