Object description
The Women's Institute in the village of Strete, Devon, was burned down during training exercises carried out in preparation for the D-Day Landings. The chimneys and part of the walls are still standing, although the roof is badly damaged and weeds are growing from the empty shell of the building. This building was so badly damaged because it is on the cliff top and bore the brunt of the naval shelling. The original caption states that the Trustees "will get compensation and build [a] new Institute".
