A young pony seller leads a pony into the sale ring under some trees at Bampton Fair. Farmers and dealers form the ring around the animal; there is no fence or 'official' sale ring. The pony seller and many of the farmers are smoking pipes. This photograph was probably taken at the stables in an orchard behind Tiverton Hotel in Bampton, which is where the pony sales have operated from since they began in the 1800s.
