Boys of Ashwell Merchant Taylors School hoe their potato crop in the grounds of the school. According to the original caption, the previous year's crop weighed 4 1/5 tons. In the background, girls of the school shelter from the sun in the shade of the trees, and the tower, lantern and spike of the 14th Century parish church of St Mary the Virgin can also be seen.
