Personalities: Field Marshal Sir Bernard Montgomery, Commander of 21st Army Group, checks a situation map with Major General Matthew B Ridgway, Commander of 18th US Airborne Division, during the Battle of the Bulge. Montgomery's appointment to command the Allied armies - which were largely American - on the north flank of the German salient, was controversial.
