Children who have been orphaned and/or made homeless by the Blitz are cared for in the John Keble Church sick bay. Volunteer nurses bandage the head of a boy on the left, and check the hand of a girl on the right. The female doctor, who visits when necessary, checks medicine and supplies on the right of the photograph. The children would be kept here until a new, safe home could be found for them.
