The Home Guard: Members of the Home Guard in Springfield, Essex which was largely formed of old soldiers. Photograph shows, from left to right: Major L G Bird, the local bank manager, who is in charge of the company; Lieutenant W Lovesey, a prison warder, who is the Home Guard Instructor and E C Charlick, the Assistant Quartermaster-Sergeant who keeps pigs for a living.
