A British Army English Electric Thunderbird II missile in its launching position, with members of 36 Heavy Air Defence Regiment, Royal Artillery. Thunderbird was intended to provide the British Army with air defence and originally designed to attack fast moving high altitude targets. This mark entered service with the Defence Regiment of the Royal Artillery in 1965-1966 and remained in service for the next ten years. It had an improved guidance system and the capability of engaging targets at a much lower altitude than its predecessor.
