Object description

image: a night scene inside the trench of an advanced post with four British infantrymen on duty, all posed with their backs to the viewer. Two stand at the bottom of the trench, while the others sit and lean higher up on firesteps on the parapet, constructed with earth and sandbags. They all appear to be listening and watching intently, with the man in the upper centre looking towards a trench periscope, providing a view over No Man's Land without him having to put his head above the parapet. All of the men are armed with bayonets attached to their rifles. Metal barbed wire stakes run along the top of the trench and there is the entrance to a dugout in the lower right.
