Label

This First World War poster, while acknowledging the scale of destruction in modern industrialised conflict, offers hope for a successful and speedy conclusion through new technology. A British invention, the ‘tank’ was quickly taken up by the French who produced a number of successful designs, such as the Model 1917 Renault which figured prominently in the Allied offensives of 1918. Montassier's war-winning machine pays little reference to contemporary armoured fighting vehicles, but has more in common with the science fiction machines used by the invading Martians in H G Wells’ ‘The War of the Worlds’ of 1898.
