Stationery Office by J. Howitt and Son Ltd., Nottm. 51-2043

Hilder was a painter of landscapes, marine subjects and architectural scenes. He was a cosmopolitan figure who first exhibited in Paris in 1929 and lived in France and Italy for periods of time. Before the War he was a member of the English avant-garde group Unit One, and a friend of Paul Nash and Edward Wadsworth. However, his vision of the English pastoral idyll looks back to a golden age, rather than forwards to the post-war era.
