Object description
image: A residential street in Bethnal Green lined with large sandbag constructions. People walk down the street and
children play around the sandbags. Four birds fly in the sky.
Label
This work was included in an exhibition of Gross' work at the Leicester Galleries in early 1940. The exhibition
contained drawings of defence preparations in London and sandbags were used to protect against blast and bomb splinters. At the end of
February the War Artist's Advisory Committee purchased this work and 'ARP Post', and his exhibition directly led to his gaining a
commission as an Official War Artist in March 1940.
