14 to 16 January. A tank officer works out a bearing on a map with a protractor and a sun compass on a jeep. Regimental Quartermaster Sergeant Lawrence leaves the stores tent with an armful of "comforts". A man receives a pullover, scarf and mittens. A line of men wait to receive the goods. Men receiving the comforts. A trooper reads Blighty magazine. Three soldiers trying on pullovers. A trooper with a bundle of home comforts under his arm and a magazine walks away from the camera. 5 January. Unscrewing the bit or chisel. Sergeant Corbin examines the cutting edges of the bit. A conducting shaft is lowered into the hole made by the bit. The conducting shaft is fixed to the crane hawser. The shaft is lowered into the bore and the cable on the hawser is removed. The existing water point. An Arab boy drinking. The boring plant is rigged up at the new site. A captured German water wagon sign. Men drinking tea. Sergeant Corbin and a sapper at work boring. A bailer is raised from the ground. It is then lowered into the hole and raised again. Water is emptied from it. This continues until Sergeant Corbin is satisfied that a good supply of water can be obtained from the well.
