Object description
An impression of the essential work of the various Artificer trades in ensuring the smooth running of the Navy.
Full description
In a prologue, a trainees' dormitory is reduced to a pillow fight by arguing which branch is most important; a 'Chief' restores order but avoids answering the question himself; the question and his answer (the most important is "the one you can't do without" but you cannot sort out which that is) are repeated (in a shore-bound launch) at the end of the film. Between these 2 scenes preparations for a torpedo exercise are shown in some detail: most of the action takes place on an aircraft carrier (HMS Illustrious ?) showing how she is made ready and got under way, and how routine maintenance work is carried out, but activities at an motor torpedo boat Shore Station, on board a submarine and the shore depot of the carrier's aircraft are also suggested. The different field and duties of Shipwright, Engine Room, Electrical, Radio-Electrical, Ordnance and special Aircraft Artificers are explained and illustrated: "Big ships or small ships, they can't do without the artificer."
