2nd Battalion, the Rifle Brigade, on the Western Front, autumn 1917.
Groups of men and officers pose for the camera. The men soap their equipment, and clean their uniforms and rifles. One man stands in a pit with a Lewis machine gun on an anti-aircraft mount and a pair of binoculars. Cooks carry dixies of food to a temporary cookhouse, and soup is served out. The battalion rests outside some huts. Sides of meat are unloaded from a wagon. Two companies from the battalion march along a dirt road near the front.
