Object description

"One of a film series about jobs after the war." In this case, agricultural workers.

Full description

A war agricultural committee man is advising a townsman Lance Corporal who has expressed interest in agriculture - they visit various farms, meeting a smallholder, labourer and land army girl etc. The Lance Corporal's initial optimistic dream of "a bit of land of my own" is dispelled by the smallholder, who explains the risks and difficulties especially for the inexperienced. The example of the labourer and the experience of the land girl are used to examine a more realistic starting point - the expert is anxious that the Lance Corporal should have no illusions, and in conversation reasserts the lessons and adds explanations about wages, training etc. The constantly repeated message is that farming is not easy, for the worker or his family (hard work, long hours, 7 day week, loneliness): in short - "a simple, hard life. It either suits you or it doesn't - if it does, well, it's the best life in the world."
