55 ms letters written to his family between January 1917 and January 1919 while he was serving, ultimately as a corporal, with the 2/16th Battalion London Regiment (Queen's Westminster Rifles) (179th Brigade, 60th Division until May 1918, then 90th Brigade, 30th Division) in Salonika, Egypt and Palestine with useful, often detailed, descriptions of local conditions, mention of the capture of Jersualem by his Division (December 1917) and his subsequent wounding by a sniper and references to his hospitalisation and long convalescence in Alexandria (January - June 1918) and later service in France (July 1918 onwards) including his hospitalisation for influenza in Boulogne and peace celebrations there in November 1918; also an exercise book with ms diary notes (17pp) written between June 1916 and November 1917 and covering his service on the Western Front near Maroeuil, his journey to Salonika in November 1916 on the TRANSYLVANIA, operations during the Battle of Doiran (April - May 1917), his journey to Egypt on the MANITOU in June 1917 and the capture of Beersheba and Sheria (October - November 1917), together with loose ms notes (14pp) written circa October 1917 - October 1918 also covering operations in Palestine and leave in Cairo.
