Ts memoir (230pp) recounting his service as a Private with the London Rifle Brigade, 1914-1915 and later with the 2/16th Battalion London Regiment (Queen's Westminster Rifles) (179th Brigade, 60th Division), serving in France, Salonika and Palestine during the First World War, describing in detail his military training and postings throughout East Anglia with the London Rifle Brigade, volunteering for the Queen's Westminster Rifles, the background to the campaigns in which he fought, the design, construction and maintenance of trenches, roads, landing strips and mule tracks, daily routines and duties, living and rest conditions in and out of the trenches, the high number of casualties from disease, particularly in Salonika, the death toll whilst marching in blizzard conditions to Karasouli, driving Turkish forces from Jerusalem in December 1917 and defeat by the Turks in the Jordan Valley, the shocking state of the troops and conditions on his return to France in 1918, returning to England as a casualty, the death rate caused by the influenza epidemic and demobilisation. Also included are 4 ts letters (7pp), 1965 - 1969, written by him to Reginald Pound, Frank Beaumont and EC Cleaver requesting help with details of his memoir and 5 ts letters (5pp), 1965 - 1969, from them in reply; 7 photocopies of photographs showing him and his regimental colleagues; and a copy of a speech given at Paddington Chapel in 1919.
