Ts transcription of letters written to his family whilst he was training with the Oxford University OTC and then serving with the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards (Guards Division) on the Western Front, December 1915 - August 1918, providing a picture of a junior Guards' officers life while revealing his loyalty for his Battalion, describing the routine of life in the trenches, New Years Eve celebrations and officers' diet, the Battle of the Somme (September 1916) and heavy casualties during the fighting at Flers-Courcellette and Morval, the bad conditions (November 1916), booby traps encountered during the German withdrawal to the Hindenburg line (March 1917), the attack on Pilkem Ridge (July 1917), their move to trenches near Arras (1918), his opinions of American soldiers (August 1918) and return to the United Kingdom to serve as an instructor, also mentioning his views about conscientious objectors (12 January 1916), the ASC (1 August 1916), the YMCA (15 January 1918), the French (29 April 1918), and the death of music hall artist Basil Hallam (20 August 1916); together with three diaries, 1916 - 1918, containing summary entries covering his movements and events with which he was concerned.
