Microfilm of his ms diary, August 1915 - January 1916, and ms and ts letters, February 1901 - August 1918, relating to his service as a close personal friend with Field Marshal Sir John French as his ADC in South Africa, September 1899 - March 1902, and as his Private Secretary at GHQ on the Western Front, 1915, including: operations against the Boers in the Cape Colony and Transvaal; army reform; his duties at GHQ in St Omer, France, notably conducting important visitors at the front; tours of inspection; daily meetings; and a record of Sir John French's daily activities, moodiness, and health; and commenting on personalities, notably Winston Churchill, Sir John Fortescue, George Moore, Frederick Palmer (US war correspondent), and Sir John Seely, and Field Marshal Sir Henry Wilson; visits by King George V, Field Marshal Lord Kitchener, and Lord Esher; relations with the Allies, notably the French; British strategic planning; the replacement of Sir John French as Commander-in-Chief; the Dardanelles expedition; the supply of armaments and manpower; the heavy casualties; compulsory service; and the various factions within the British Government.
