Photocopied ts account (116pp, written in 1985) recording his service in the UK and North Africa in the ranks of the 138th (City of London) Field Regiment RA TA, as an officer with the Buffs, and as a Personnel Selection Officer, April 1939 - March 1946, including: volunteering to join the 90th (City of London) Field Regiment RA TA (April 1939) from which was formed the 138th Field Regiment RA; attending a fortnight's camp at Borden near Aldershot (July 1939); mobilisation (August 1939); training at Bushey, Wembley, Willesden Junction, Ampthill and RAF Cranfield in Bedfordshire, Rugeley and Milford in Staffordshire, Margam Castle and Bwlch in South Wales, and Rottingdean in Sussex (September 1939 - April 1941); appearing before a War Office Selection Board (WOSB) and being selected to attend an OCTU (April 1941); officer training at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst (May 1941 - ?September 1941); commissioned into the Buffs (September 1941); service as a platoon commander with the 8th Battalion (209th Independent Brigade) at Paignton (September 1941 - ?October 1941); the 5th Battalion (36th Brigade, 78th Division) in Glasgow, St Fillans in Perthshire, and the Western Isles of Scotland (?October 1941 - November 1942), during the voyage in the STRATHNAVER to North Africa (November 1942), on active service in North Africa (November 1942 - April 1943) taking part in the landing at Bougie (Operation TORCH, November 1942) and acting as Liaison Officer with 36th Brigade HQ (December 1942 - April 1943, when he was wounded), and recovering in the 67th General Hospital at Bone, the 96th General Hospital at Phillippeville and the 97th General Hospital in Algiers (April 1943 - July 1943); his return to the UK by aeroplane for treatment at Botley Park Hospital in Chertsey, Surrey (July 1943 - October 1943); service with a Battalion of the South Staffordshire Regiment and as an Adjutant of Home Guard Battalions in Rugeley and Swynnerton (Staffordshire) and Smethwick near Birmingham (October 1943 - January 1945); as an instructor converting a Coastal Battery of the Royal Artillery into infantry in South Brent, Devon (January 1945 - May 1945); attending a Personnel Officers' Training School at Tadworth in Surrey and then serving as a Personnel Selection Officer (PSO) with the Rifle Brigade Depot at Winchester Barracks and with the DLI and the Duke of Wellington's Regiment at Brancepeth Castle near Durham, assessing new recruits until demobilisation (May 1945 - March 1946); and commenting on army life; off-duty entertainment; attending a "Battle School" at Callender in Scotland (October 1942); his battle experiences; the rations; the weather; Moroccan Goums; the American Army; meeting and marrying his wife; and mentioning Lieutenant General K Anderson; Brigadier B Howlett; Major General Sir Douglas Kendrew; General Schreiber (?Lieutenant General C Allfrey, V Corps); Brigadier Theodore Roosevelt USA; and Ken Wharton (the racing driver).
