Extensive collection of material relating to various members of a German-Jewish family, comprising: ms transcription of Ludwig Kuttner's diary (61pp in German), made by his family shortly after the war, kept during his service as a Corporal in the German Army (Medical Corps), November 1914 - April 1915, together with a ts translation (30pp), recording call-up and active service with Reserve Infantry Regiment 263 on the Eastern Front, providing some good descriptions of life in the trenches and action against Russian troops (he was killed on the Western Front in August 1917); two letters written to his family in 1914 and 1916 and several documents relating to the military service of his two brothers, including a 'Soldbuch' and certificate of award of the Iron Cross (II Class), together with 32 wartime postcards and photographs; miscellaneous documents dating from the 1930s, mainly concerning Dr Hermann and Johanna Kuttner who emigrated from Germany to England before the Second World War, including official letters concerning his arrest and 'protective custody', the family's aborted attempt to emigrate to Peru, police testimonials and a list of valuables drawn up as part of the emigration procedure; various official papers relating to the Cohn family, late 1930s; a series of Red Cross messages dated 1941 - 1945 between members of the Kuttner family and relations in London, Berlin and Shanghai; miscellaneous papers belonging to Elsa Dzialiner, consisting mainly of Civil Defence and ARP pamphlets; a large collection of letters written by Captain A Bassett Silver during his service with the Reconnaissance Corps and the REME in North Africa, Italy and Austria (successively 26th Armoured Brigade, 8th Indian Division and 6th Armoured Division), 1942 - 1945, together with a smaller number written by Captain A Leigh Silver whilst serving with 72nd British General Hospital in North Africa and Greece, 1943 - 1945; and a small number of miscellaneous papers mainly relating to Bassett Silver's military service, including captured Italian and German documents.
