Content description

Photocopies of a contemporary ts account (5pp) of his experiences as a midshipman in HMS LION, the flagship of the Battle Cruiser Fleet, at the Battle of Jutland, giving a useful general impression of the course of the action and of the damage to LION's `Q' turret and admitting that he `began to feel rather less confident' after witnessing the loss of three of the other battle cruisers and had `had quite enough' by the late evening of 31 May 1916; and of a ts transcript (3pp) of a letter which he wrote home as a Sub Lieutenant in HMS SHARK (5th Destroyer Flotilla, British Aegean Squadron) in December 1918 describing the lavish hospitality extended by the White Russians during the ship's recent visits to Black Sea ports.
