Content description

3 ms accounts written by a young fireman while attached to Euston Road Fire Station in London in 1940 and describing the first full scale night raid on the East End, where he helped to fight a massive blaze at the Beckton Gas Works in September (4pp); another night raid on the East End in autumn 1940 (4pp); and a night raid on the City in December (8pp), all three accounts providing a vivid impression of the work of the London Fire Service during the Blitz, and emphasising the difficulties of driving to fires in the blackout and finding a water supply in a devastated area with enemy bombers still overhead. Hurd was killed during the major raid on London on 29 - 30 December 1940; the collection includes three photographs of him in uniform.
