Ms Midshipman's Journal (52pp) for October 1914 - May 1915, two ms pocket diaries (94pp and 166pp) for October 1914 - January 1917 and an edited ms transcript (155pp) of the pocket diaries, all containing approximately the same entries covering his service as a Midshipman RNR in the armoured cruiser HMS KENT which was employed on the Cape Verde - Canaries Station in the Atlantic (October - November 1914); with Vice Admiral Sturdee's squadron in the South Atlantic (November - December 1914) including the Battle of the Falklands, where she sank the German light cruiser NURNBERG; on the Pacific Station (December 1914 - March 1916) during which time she was present at the sinking of the German light cruiser DRESDEN off the Juan Fernandez Islands (14 March 1915); refitting at Simonstown, South Africa (April - June 1916); and on the Cape Station (June - December 1916) escorting troop transports from Cape Town to Freetown and Dakar. The collection also includes a presscutting book covering HMS KENT's commission from 1914 to 1917 which contains newspaper copies of two of his letters, some postcards he wrote or sent home from the ship and his official RNR service records, 1914 - 1928.
